Mrudula revealed that she was approached by Director Tigmanshu Dhulia to play the role of Captain Lakshmi Sahgal. Dhulia gave her the role because he believed that she would suit the role the best.
“It wasn’t until I signed the movie that I finally came to terms with the fact that I was actually doing a Bollywood movie,” Mrudula said.
The film showcases the contribution of Subhash Chandra Bose’s INA in the freedom struggle and brings to light many unheard stories from that era.
Mrudula Murali’s character – Captain Lakshmi – lead the all-women Rani of Jhansi regiment of the INA and marched to Burma with the Japanese army.
Talking about preparations that went into the role, Mrudula lauded the research team of Raag Desh.
“It was exciting to know how the vibrant Lakshmi Swaminathan, who was a classical dancer, got a new identity as Captain Lakshmi,” Mrudula said.
The story of Raag Desh centers around three INA officers – Colonel Prem Sahgal (Mohit Marwah), Lt Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon (Amit Sadh) and Major General Shah Nawaz Khan (Kunal Kapoor) – who were captured and imprisoned at the Red Fort.
