Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu interacted with the scientists, agricultural experts and farmers at Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA) in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
He addressed the gathering and said that of the need of the hour is to make agriculture sustainable and profitable with consistent increase in its growth rate. Multi-pronged strategy is required to make agriculture viable and profitable.
The Vice President underlined the uncertainties that drive farmers to fall into prolonged debt traps leading to rise in tragic suicide incidents. He further raised concerns over how to address agrarian crisis. He said a systematic framework is required to resolve the crisis which will strengthen farmers and make them efficiently contribute in GDP.
Highlighting the role and importance of water in agriculture sector, he said that apprising farmers of traditional and modern methods of water conservation will help in effective water budgeting.
Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) must be reinforced to bridge gap between the scientific advancement and agriculture and further connect them, said VP Naidu.
He further said that self-sufficiency in terms of food security is the reason behind every successful nation.
“No country which was dependent on others for its food security has been successful”, he said.
Finally, he urged everyone to pledge for sustainability of farmers’ livelihood and to strengthen them so that they can live with their heads held high.
