OROP-genNarendra Modi government is set to issue the notification on One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme after the conclusion of Assembly Polls in Bihar. Union Defence minister Manohar Parrikar said that the government didn’t come out with the notification to roll-out the scheme as the model code of conduct was in place due to Bihar polls. After over three months of strong protest by several ex-servicemen, Defence ministry had on September 5 announced the decision to implement OROP scheme.

“It (notification) will be issued within days after the Bihar poll process ends,” Parrikar told the press in New Delhi.

When asked by the press pack if it would be a Diwali gift to the protesting veterans, Mr. Parrikar replied, “I am trying to have it before Diwali (November 11).”

The counting of votes and results for the polls will be announced on November 8 but the model code of conduct will remain in place till November 12.

OROP-genThe BJP-led NDA government is facing another wave of protest by the group of ex-servicemen over the long-pending emotional issue which was announced on September 5 but is yet to be notified by the Centre.

A group of protesting ex-servicemen sitting on protest at Jantar Mantar for more than 130 days now, had on Sunday written a letter to Prime Minister Modi demanding an early implementation of OROP as well as acting on some more demands. They also urged the Prime Minister to look into what they have been claiming “seven serious shortcomings”.

“If implemented without the removal of the shortcomings, it will kill the definition of OROP,” the letter written by the group of armed force veterans claimed. The ex-servicemen Movement spokesperson Col (Retd) Anil Kaul told the press that the letter was signed in blood by around 200 general officers and others.

The 40-year-old issue of One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme was one of the top poll-promises made by the BJP during 2014 General Elections. The scheme, which now awaits a notification, will benefit several war widows and families of the war veterans
