India has bagged three titles at the Wimbledon championship in London this year.
On Sunday 42-year-old Leander Paes clinched his 16th Grand Slam trophy, winning the mixed doubles event with Martina Hingis at the Wimbledon Championship in London.
Paes-Hingis duo defeated Alexander Peya and Timea Babo 6-1, 6-1.
Seventh seed pair of Paes-Hingis thrashed fifth seed pair Peya-Babo in straight sets, to wrap up the championship match in about 40 minutes.
The fifth-seed duo was no match to Paes and Hingis from the start. They failed to put up any resistance in what turned out to be a lop-sided final.
After winning the 1st set in less than 19 minutes, Paes and Hingis kept the pressure on the Austrian- American opponents from the first game of the second set. This helped Paes and Hingis to get an early break and then race to victory in no time.
This is Paes’ eighth mixed doubles title and his second with Hingis. Paes-Hingis also won the Australian Open early this year.
Paes’ win on Sunday, capped an incredibly successful Wimbledon for India.
Sania Mirza won the women’s doubles title with Martina Hingis. For Sania, it was her maiden women’s doubles title at a grand slam. She had earlier won three mixed doubles at the majors.
“It’s an amazing feeling to wake up as Wimbledon champion,” Sania Mirza told the news agency following her historic triumph at the most coveted Grand Slam championship.
17-year-old Sumit Nagal won the junior boys doubles trophy at the Wimbledon., He became only the sixth Indian to win a grand slam junior title. Nagal and his eighth seed Vietnamese partner overcame the fourth seeds Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan in the title clash that lasted 63 minutes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the teen on twitter saying, “It was very heartening to see Sumit Nagal win at @Wimbledon. Congrats and best wishes to this young sportsman.”
