The three-day long intense operation in Pampore has come to an end. Security forces took control of the situation Wednesday afternoon after eliminating two militants who were holed up inside a government building on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. The operation intensified in its last leg today morning as security forces launched final assault to secure the multi-storey structure with mortars and rockets.

According to the officials, the operation took long security forces had to search all the 50 rooms of the building to ensure that all militants were neutralised. Two militants were killed in the operation.

“We have recovered bodies of two militants and the search operation at the EDI building in Pampore has been almost completed,” the army official said.

While one militant was killed yesterday evening, the other militant was shot dead by the security forces today, the official said

The security forces were locked in the operation at the EDI building since Monday after militants, then reported to be three in number, barged inside the complex with the aim of engaging the law enforcing agencies. Elite Para commandos of the army were also called in to neutralise the militants.

Most parts of the concrete building have been reduced to a skeleton after many of its walls were blown up, while the area around the EDI premises has been cordoned off to prevent the militants from escaping.

Two to three militants stormed into the EDI complex in the wee hours of Monday and took positions inside one of the buildings. The militants could have entered the complex from the riverside but that can only be ascertained once the operation is over, the officials said.

After getting inside the complex, the militants set on fire few mattresses inside a hostel room to attract the attention of the police and other security forces, which arrived within minutes of the smoke emanating from the building.

In the initial exchange of firing, one army soldier was injured, the officials said.

Militants had targeted the EDI building in February this year as well where three militants were killed in the operation that lasted 48 hours.

Five security force personnel, including two young army officers, and a civilian employee of the Institute too were killed in that incident.
