Situation turned tense in Panjab University on Tuesday after students protesting against fee hike sought refuge in a Gurdwara situated inside the campus.

Following the call given by the Joint Students Action Committee to observe PU bandh on Tuesday, students boycotted classes and joined the protest.

The protest turned ugly when police started lathi-charging the students and students retaliated by pelting stones.  Several students and policemen were injured with police resorting to water cannon, tear gas and cane charge after protesters pelted stones at them. Some mediapersons were also injured during the protest.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Left parties including CPI and CPI(M) condemned police action on students and demanded a probe into the matter.
