In a new twist in the high profile Sheena Bora murder case, media baron Peter Mukerjea has been slapped with murder charges and sent to CBI custody for three days until the 23rd of November.
Peter Mukerjea, husband of Indrani Mukerjea, was arrested on Thursday evening, just hours after the probe agency filed a chargesheet in the case. The chargesheet said that Indrani along with her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyamvar Rai killed Sheena in April 2012. Sheena was Indrani’s daughter from a previous marriage.
Now, Peter too has been charged with murder and criminal conspiracy. He has also been accused of destroying evidence and lying to protect his wife Indrani, the prime accused in the case.
Peter was produced in court in Mumbai on Friday afternoon where the CBI sought his 14-day custody. The probe agency argued that he was involved in the murder conspiracy with his wife, and he played an active role in it. The CBI also alleged that Peter tried to shield Indrani and his statements during investigations were very inconsistent.
The CBI said in the court that Peter was in touch with Indrani when the murder happened and was aware of the plot to kill Sheena, even though he was in the US. Later, Peter lied to his son Rahul about Sheena’s disappearance, the CBI said in court.
Rahul, who was also present in the court hearing, told reporters that his father’s arrest came as a “shock” to him.
“I don’t believe he knew (anything about the murder)..otherwise I wouldn’t be here,” he told reporters after the court hearing.
On Wednesday, the CBI questioned both Peter and Rahul. Rahul was grilled for over 12 hours and let off after that, but Peter was arrested and subsequently produced in court.
24-year-old Sheena was strangled in April 2012 allegedly by Indrani and the other two accused. Her body was set on fire and dumped in a forest in Raigad, 80 kms from Mumbai. The crime remained hidden for three years, until Sheena’s remains were found in August this year, after which Indrani and her accomplices were arrested.
