Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached shillong on Friday Afternoon to address the 65th North Eastern Council (NEC) meeting in Shillong today. The NEC is the nodal agency of the Ministry of Development for NE Region that comprises the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
The meet has gained prominence after BJP’s poll victory in Assam. On the day Sarbananda Sonowal took oath of office in Assam, the BJP has floated an alliance under the umbrella of North East Democratic Alliance to extend centre’s cooperation to north east region.
Speaking at the plenary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said North East Council has always been instrumental in establishing educational and infrastructure institutions in the North East.
Saying that improving all round connectivity, like telecom, road, rail and power at par with other regions, he added that 30,000 crore has been earmarked to develop the region.
“We have established 10 GB seamless bandwidth with Bangladesh to provide internet to the northeast region,” the PM said.
PM said that Tourism Ministry has identified thematic tourism and sports plans for the region which will contribute to the economy.
“There is great scope for tourism, mountaineering, tracking and adventure sports in the region which has the potential of creating employment,” said the PM
Narendra Modi said that Government has approved BPO training program as part of Digital India imitative to the English speaking youth of the region.
Governor of Meghalaya and Manipur Shanmuganathan said that north east political history and independent struggle must be made part of curriculum in schools.
“School books must tell students of Shankara Dev stories. Manipur war heroes should be there. Then they will know how north East was fighting for freedom,” said the Governor
The meet is attended by Governors and Chief Ministers of the eight north eastern states and deliberate on the overall development of the region where the Prime Minister is slated to release a special cover and a stamp brought out by the Department of Posts.
PM Modi is expected to unveil train services on the occasion including Jiribam (Manipur)-Silchar (Assam) daily passenger train, Bhairabi (Mizoram) – Silchar daily passenger train and Kamakhya-Vaishno Devi Katra (Jammu and Kashmir) Express weekly train.
The Prime Minister will wind up his maiden visit to the city by addressing a gathering of youths at the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre (RKMVCC) at Quinton Road on the morning of May 28.
Prime Minister Modi will also address the youths at 7:20 AM at the historic Vivekananda Hall before returning to Delhi.
