Prime Minister Narendra Modi kick-started NDA’s poll campaign in Bihar. This was his maiden visit to the state after assuming power at the Centre.
At the ‘Parivartan’ rally in Muzaffarpur in Bihar, PM Modi launched a scathing attack on former ally Nitish Kumar. He accused Nitish of “back-stabbing” not just him but also the people of Bihar.
“During the last elections, Kumar had said that if he was unable to provide electricity to entire Bihar, he would not come to ask for votes again in 2015…But have you got the electricity? It has not come. But he has come to ask for votes. He betrayed your trust. Forget me, he even back-stabbed you. Such people cannot be trusted again,” PM Narendra Modi said.
PM Modi also attacked the Bihar CM of practicing “political untouchability”. He alleged that Nitish Kumar deliberately stopped development in the state post March only because the CM disliked him.
“There seems to be some problem in his DNA because the DNA of democracy is not like that. In democracy, you give respect even to your political rivals,” he said.
The Prime Minister also targeted Nitish for allying with the RJD and Lalu Prasad. He said the duo was trying to drag the state back to ‘jungle raj’.
Leaving no stone unturned in attacking Nitish, PM Modi played the dalit card and accused Nitish of practising untouchability towards a “mahadalit.” He was referring to former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, who joined the NDA after splitting from JD(U).
PM Modi, also spoke about the special economic package for Bihar. Narendra Modi, while campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls in 2014, had promised a package of Rs 50,000 crore for the development of Bihar.
While addressing the rally, Modi told the crowds that he will announce a bigger economic package for the state soon after the ongoing Parliament session is over.
After PM’s speech at the rally, Nitish Kumar took to twitter to hit back at him. Nitish tweeted, “I leave it to the people of Bihar to decide and give a fitting reply to those who have said that there is a problem with my DNA”.
Interestingly, earlier in the day, in Patna, PM Modi shared the dais with Nitish Kumar at an event where he launched several development projects for the state. They sat next to each other and did not make harsh references to each other in their speeches.
The event was attended by several BJP state leaders and union ministers with senior leaders like Sushil Kumar, Nand Kishore Yadav, Shatrughan Sinha, Ramvilas Paswan being present.
Again, right before the event, earlier this morning, Nitish Kumar targeted the PM on twitter posing sarcastic questions, reminding him about the promises he made while campaigning during the Lok Sabha polls last year.
The war of words between the JD(U) and the BJP is likely to get louder as their poll campaigns gather more steam. Bihar goes to polls later this year.
