Fight against terrorism and poverty was the dominant theme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the BRICS summit in Ufa on Thursday. The Prime Minister specially stressed for the need to fight terror without any discrimination between the sponsors or groups or the targeted nations.
“Peace and stability is the foundation for social and economic progress. It is our responsibility that we deal effectively with the current challenge of terrorism,” PM Modi said, addressing the 7th Summit of BRICS.
With the leaders of the other participating nations paying rapt attention to the address, Narendra Modi said: “We must unitedly fight against it (terrorism), without any discrimination between groups, or countries, sponsors or targeted countries”.
“We must do this in BRICS as well as UN Security Council and in other groups of nations”, he added further.
The remarks assume significance in the wake of China blocking India’s proposal at the UN Sanctions Committee last month, where India sought action against Pakistan for releasing of LeT operations commander Lakhvi. Lakhvi is a mastermind behind 26/11 Mumbai attacks of 2008.
The Prime Minister also pitched for urgent UN reforms to make it relevant to the present world realities.
“If UN has to be relevant in the 21st century, it needs to be reformed. Any type of social, economic and challenges can be met only by reforming the UNSC at the earliest,” he said.
Broadening the discourse on socio-economic issues, the Prime Minister said that poverty should be the “main agenda” of United Nations and poverty alleviation the “main issue”. He also said that additional food should be sent to food deficit countries, so that any country should not face anyone had to food shortages.
Besides, he also proposed an annual BRICS trade fair aimed at improving business relations between the member countries.
“I am going to propose an annual BRICS trade fair, which will be hosted by the country chairing BRICS. India will be happy to host first such trade fair,” Prime Minister Modi said.
The PM expressed confidence that BRICS nations can play a major role in mitigating global challenges and said it not only stands for the nations it represents but for the well-being of the entire World.
PM Modi also thanked the BRICS nations for their vigorous support and participation during International Day of Yoga on June 21.
