PM Modi announces a memorial to honour Kalam

Kalam-anniv-2015-3On the 84th birth anniversary of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured the late president by announcing the much awaited memorial in Rameshwaram.

“A committee has been set up to discuss modalities in this regard,” announced PM Modi while talking about the government’s plan of constructing a memorial for Kalam at his birth-place in Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu.

PM Modi also announced that the government had already acquired the land for the memorial. Modi was addressing a function to commemorate Kalam’s 84th birth anniversary at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Bhawan in New Delhi, where Kalam spent several years as a scientist.

While paying tribute, PM Modi emphasised on the challenge seeking personality of Kalam.

“There are two types of people, one who look for opportunities and the other who look for challenges. Kalam Saheb was the one who always looked for challenges” said Modi in admiration of Kalam.

“Just after leaving the Presidency, after such a big position, he went to teach. This can’t happen without an inherent commitment…. Our young scientists should get inspired by the way shown by Dr Kalam,” PM Modi told the scientists at the event.

In praise of the Bharat Ratna awardee, Prime Minister Modi said that the former President was a “Rashtraratan” before he became a Rashtrapati. He also said that Dr Kalam’s sudden death on 27th July early this year had left a void which could only be filled by following his teachings in true spirit.

A postage stamp in commemoration of the life of former President Abdul Kalam was also released at the function.

Several union ministers were present at the event at DRDO Bhawan. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan were all present to pay their respects.

Meanwhile Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu paid his tribute to Dr Kalam by announcing that Rameshwaram would be converted into an AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme) city. An AMRUT city is an urban development scheme that provides basic services and builds amenities in cities to improve the quality of life.
