Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the verdict of the Supreme Court on triple talaq.

Earlier in the day, Supreme Court by a majority verdict set aside the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims, saying the practice was void, illegal and unconstitutional.

The apex court held that the triple talaq was against the basic tenets of Quran.

“In view of the different opinions recorded by a majority of 3:2, the practice of ‘talaq-e-biddat’ triple talaq is set aside,” a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court said in a 395-page order.

Apart from the Prime Minister Modi, several BJP leaders and ministers hailed the verdict.

“The Supreme Court judgment in the #TripleTalaq case undoes the injustice to Muslim women who were victims of a unilateral termination of a matrimonial relationship,” tweeted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Several other political parties also called the order  a step forward towards gender justice and equality.
