President Pranab Mukherjee addressed a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on Monday morning, the first day of the Budget Session of Parliament.
In his hour-long address, the President favoured a constructive debate on simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and Assemblies and funding of polls to eradicate money power.
“Frequent elections put on hold development programmes, disrupt normal public life and impact essential services and burden human resource with prolonged period of election duty….My government welcomes a constructive debate on simultaneous conduct of elections to Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. Funding of elections to eradicate misuse of money power also needs to be debated,” the President said.
The President referred to the government’s demonetisation move and the surgical strikes it carried out across LoC, as bold decisions.
The President’s speech highlighted the Government’s narrative on what it had done during the year and what it plans to do in the new financial year.
President Mukherjee spoke about the measures taken by the government in various spheres. “Holistic development” of the farm sector, ushering in a “technological revolution”, reduced rate of inflation and development of infrastruture are some of the areas highlighted by the President.
The President also added how the government was committed to combating terrorism and to ensure that perpetrators of such acts are brought to justice.
