President of India Ram Nath Kovind honoured individuals and organisations working for women empowerment and presented them with ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar’ on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Thursday.
The recipients came from diverse fields, including sports, arts, social work, science, agriculture, education, security, handicrafts and defence. This year, 30 individual awardees and nine institutional awardees were selected.
Winners included the all-woman crew of Indian Navy’s sailing vessel Tarini which circumnavigated the globe, Justice Gita Mittal for the vulnerable witness project for survivors of sexual violence, Thinlas Chorol who founded the Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company.
A Chhattisgarh government initiative of setting up a bakery unit for survivors of human trafficking also received an award from the President.
