Teachers Day: President Kovind confers National Awards to teachers

President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday conferred National Awards to teachers for the year 2018 on the occasion of Teachers’ Day at an event organised in New Delhi to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

The award is given to meritorious teachers on Teachers Day to celebrate the unique contribution of teachers and to honour those teachers who have improved the quality of school education and enriched the lives of students.

As many as 46 teachers were chosen from across the country to be felicitated in the national capital as India geared to celebrate Teachers’ Day.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said, “the foundation of character building is laid in schools and teachers are largely responsible for building the moral character of young minds”.

The President urged the teachers to understand their fundamental responsibilities and said values like honesty, discipline and integrity are instilled in young minds by the teacher.

He said Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was not only a great philosopher, statesman, and writer but also an extraordinary teacher.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi also expressed his greetings to the nation on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. “Teachers Day greetings to everyone. India pays tributes to Dr S Radhakrishnan, an exceptional teacher and mentor, on his Jayanti,” PM Modi said.
