Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday urged Governors, Lieutenant Governors and Administrators of all the States and Union Territories to strengthen the fight against coronavirus.

Along with President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Naidu addressed the Constitutional heads of the States and Union Territories via video-conferencing.

He told them to contact spiritual and religious leaders in their respective regions “and advise them to guide their followers to strictly adhere to the guidelines on social distancing and to observe personal hygiene.”

Cautioning the participants, the Vice President referred to a recent instance that caused widespread adverse impact across the country.

Asking everyone to treat it as a wake-up call, he said, “No religious congregations should be allowed to take place in your respective States.”

At the same time, the Vice President urged everyone to focus on the arrangements made to ensure harvesting, storage and procurement of agriculture produce in their respective States.

Calling the measures the need of the hour, the Vice President also told them to “ensure the smooth movement of farm machinery so that the farmers did not face any hardship.”

The Vice President underscored that the Central Government is keeping a keen eye on the economic stimulus and the need to safeguard the interests of the workforce amid the 21-day lockdown.

Underlining the need to help stranded migrant workers, he urged the society at large to help migrants in whichever way they can.

“While the States and the Central Government are doing their best to mitigate the hardship faced by migrant labour, it is also the duty of the society to come to their aid in terms of providing food and shelter to them,” he observed.

The Vice President also expressed concern over the incidents of assault on doctors in some States.

He said that such incidents would have a demoralizing effect on doctors and others.

Thje Vice President further asked the Governors and LGs to “…sensitise people on the crucial, life-saving role being undertaken by doctors, nurses and other frontline warriors such as sanitary staff and police personnel in the battle against COVID-19,”

Referring to the student community, the Vice President sought details about arrangements made to conduct online courses to enable them to pursue their studies.

The Vice President also praised people across the country for following lockdown and the effective enforcement of social distancing norms. “I appeal to the people to observe the norms in the same vein without any violation, deviation or dilution,” he said.

Thirty-five Governors, Lt. Governors and Administrators of States and Union Territories were present at the video conference. All of them gave an overview of the measures taken in their areas to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
