Trinamool Congress is sending a delegation of three MPs to Pune on Monday to express its solidarity with the agitating students of FTII.

“TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee has already voiced her support to the agitating students of FTII and on her advice three party MPs will visit FTII in Pune on August 24,” Derek O Brien, Rajya Sabha MP and TMC spokesperson told PTI.

“We will talk to the FTII students and spend two hours with them to express our solidarity with them”, he said.

Though opposition parties have targeted government on the FTII conflict, except Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, none of the parties made an attempt to reach out to the students directly.

Apart from O’Brien, two other TMC MPs who would be in the delegation are Abhisek Banerjee, nephew of Mamata Banerjee and President of All India Trinamool Youth Congress and actress Satabdi Roy.

The CM of West Bengal Mamata has also urged the centre to resolve the issue lending her support to the protesting students.

Voicing her support to the protesting students, Banerjee had on Saturday tweeted “The central government must resolve the issues fuelling the prevailing unrest at FTII. They must take the students and teachers into confidence.”

“Since I was associated with student movements in the past, I respect student movement. I support their genuine cause always,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee said.

“Political purpose should not stand in the way, institutions are above everything,” she added.

On July 15, Mamata had sent Derek at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to express Trinamool’s cohesion with the ex-servicemen protesting against non-implementation of One-Rank-One-Pension scheme.

Students at the premier film institute have been boycotting their classes following the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan – best known for playing the character of Yudhisthir in TV serial ‘Mahabharata’ – as its chairman.
