Congress party has stepped up its attack over the ruling BJP and especially the Prime Minister. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on Vyapam and other corruption scandals involving the BJP senior brass and state ministers.

Taking on the Prime Minister, he said that during the Lok Sabha election campaign the former had promised “corruption free” government and had even claimed that he’ll not let anyone indulge in corruption. But now, PM Modi is yet to speak anything on the matters like Vyapam and Lalit Modi controversy.

“You said ‘na khaoonga, na khane doonga’. Why are you allowing corruption in Rajasthan? What are you doing to bring back Lalit Modi? Why are you not acting against Shivraj Singh Chouhan,” Rahul Gandhi said in New Delhi.

He also demanded the resignation of the Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

“Of course,” the Congress vice-president said when asked whether the beleaguered Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should quit in the wake of the Supreme Court ordering a CBI inquiry into the Vyapam scam.

Even before Vyapam scam broke out, Congress party has been attacking the PM for not sacking Union External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje following revelations that she helped former IPL boss Lalit Modi.

Sushma Swaraj is battling the charges of conflict of interest in this major controversy, which began with the reports of her lending help to controversial Lalit Modi.

Though Sushma Swaraj on her part admitted helping out Lalit Modi, she claimed it was on the ‘humanitarian grounds’ as he had to attend his wife’s surgery in Lisbon. At that time, Lalit Modi’s passport was revoked by the Indian authorities due to a probe over alleged corruption in popular cricket series IPL, which he headed till 2010. Since 2010 Lalit Modi has been living in UK.

Along with Union External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje too is facing a heat in Lalit Modi controversy. The latter is facing allegations of helping out Lalit Modi in his immigration to UK on conditions of secrecy from Indian authorities. Raje’s son Dushyant Singh is also under attack over the allegations of his company receiving Rs 11.63 crore in investments from Lalit Modi in 2008. Dushyant Singh is BJP Lok Sabha MP from Rajasthan.

Congress has also been demanding resignations of HRD Minister Smriti Irani for allegedly misrepresenting facts about her educational qualifications in the affidavit filed before the Election Commission and Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde for her alleged involvement in a “scam” by clearing purchases worth Rs 206 crore on a single day without inviting tenders in violation of the norms.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh too has been targeted by the Congress party in the wake of an alleged “rice scam” in which Rs 36,000 crore are alleged to have been misappropriated.
