The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday gave its nod to a Bill to declare the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy as an institute of national importance. The bill was passed in the house by a voice vote.
Replying to a discussion on the Bill in the Upper House, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan assured members that the autonomy of the institute would be protected.
He said an amount of 655 crore rupees would be provided by the Centre for the institute.
Earlier, initiating the debate, Congress MP PL Punia said the autonomy of the institute needs to be safeguarded. Ravi Prakash Verma of the Samajwadi Party said the entire economy is dependent on petroleum and much more is needed to be done in this sector.
The Institute aims to provide high quality education and research focussing on the themes of petroleum, hydrocarbons and energy.
