An Indian Parliamentary delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is in Ottawa, Canada to attend 25th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC).
The delegation also comprises Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh and Secretary-General of Lok Sabha Snehlata Shrivastava.
Speaking at one of the event, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh said that Parliamentarian and multi-tasking have become synonymous in modern times. Harivansh also said that – a parliamentarian has tremendous role to perform both as a legislature and as a representative of his costituencies.
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman added – To be an effective legislature and people’s represantative it requires an adequate support system. In order to provide a parliamentarian an adequate support system, Indian Parliament has put in place robust support system to meet orientation and training requirements, knowledge and informative needs of the Members.
And for the constituency support, a scheme known as Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme has been introduced which provides the parliamentarians a unique opportunity to recommend the works of development in their constituencies or the states from which they have been elected.
The delegates from the Indian Parliament will participate in the special plenary session and other workshops of the conference. The delegation will also meet members of the Indian diaspora in Ottawa and Toronto. The conference will conclude on January 11.
