Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday contributed a month’s salary to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation Fund also known as the PM- CARES fund.
In a letter to the Rajya Sabha MPs, Naidu urged all the members to also consider doing the same.
The Vice President, who is the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha , referred to the extraordinary situation arising from the outbreak of COVID-19 which he said had been categorised as a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation.
The Vice President said the Government has set up a public charitable trust the PM- CARES fund, “keeping in mind the need for having a dedicated national fund with the primary objective of dealing with any kind of emergency or distress situation like the COVID-19 pandemic and to provide relief to the affected.”
The Vice President said the fund will enable micro donations as a result of which a large number of people will be able to contribute with the smallest of denominations.
He also reminded the MPs that it was the need of the hour that as representatives of the people they should contribute generously to this enormous effort undertaken to contain the spread of the virus.
