Saina Nehwal clinched her second Australian Open Super series title by defeating Chinese shuttler Sun Yu in a hard-fought final in Sydney on Sunday. Nehwal defeated Sun Yu for 11-21, 21-14, 21-19 in the final to win her 2nd Australian Open Super Series title.
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) today announced a reward of Rs. 10 lakh for Saina Nehwal for winning the Australian Open Super Series badminton tournament in Sydney.
“I congratulate her for this marvellous victory. This is another milestone in her career. This win will sure motivate her for the most important Rio 2016 Olympics where she is leading the Indian Badminton contingent. I also congratulate her Coach Vimal Kumar and Support Staff, who have been on their toes to bring out the best of Saina,” said Akhilesh Das Gupta who is the President of BAI
It was Saina’s first final after she lost to Li Xuerui in China last November and it improves Saina’s chances of a second consecutive podium finish at the Rio Olympics 2016.
Saina who won the title in the year 2014, fought back after conceding the first game 11-21 to Sun. She looked far from her best after Sun took an early lead in the first game and continued dominating.
However, Saina gathered some momentum and came up with a remarkable fightback in the second game and clinched it 21-14.
The final boiled down to the third game in which Saina and Sun were fighting to take the early lead. Both Saina and Sun were involved in a close contest till the match point was sealed in the third game and at the end, a difference of two points made all the difference.
