Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reached Jammu and Kashmir on Friday for a two-day visit to take stock of the security situation and review preparedness of soldiers on borders.

Sitharaman also visited a forward post on the Line of Control in Kashmir. She is also expected to visit Siachen on September 30.

The Defence Minister’s visit to the state comes days after Union Minister Jitender Singh said there is need to “change the discourse” around Jammu and Kashmir. Sitharaman, accompanied by Army chief General Bipin Rawat, arrived in J&K on her maiden visit to the state and straightaway went to Kupwara sector in north Kashmir for an on-ground assessment of the situation along the LoC.  She was received by Northern Army Commander and the Chinar Corps Commander at the Old Airfield.

During her visit, she is expected to meet senior commanders as well. This will be Nirmala Sitharaman’s first visit to the state after she assumed office as the Defence Minister earlier this month.

Senior army officials brief the defence minister about the overall situation in the Valley, including counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration operations, upon her return from Kupwara.

Sitharaman is scheduled to meet Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti later in the day, they said.
