Inaugurating the annual national seminar on ‘Social innovation and Social harmony’ in Pune on Monday, Vice President Md. Hamid Ansari stressed that social innovation when coupled with technology leads to more efficient manufacturing and developing new products and services for the consumer. At the same time, the Vice President emphasised that equality, equity, empowerment and social justice constitute the fundamental values of just and democratic societies.
“Our vision, instead, is wider and emanates from a desire to address the gaps in the developmental chain. It can best be defined as new solutions to social challenges that have the intent and effect of equality, justice and empowerment,” the Vice President said addressing the gathering.
“Social innovation is inseparable from the cultural, ecological, economic, political and spiritual environment in which it takes place. It cannot be pursued in isolation,” VP Hamid Ansari added.
Also emphasising that equality, equity, empowerment and social justice constitute the fundamental values of just and democratic societies, he said that the “promotion and protection” of those is must for all the institutions to safeguard social harmony.
“While economic progress is essential for survival and well being, it is neither a substitute nor the panacea for the social challenges that confront us,” Vice President Ansari said adding, “every society, including ours, requires its constituent parts to work in harmony.”
Speaking further, he told the audience about India’s long tradition in the field of innovation that has empowered societies across the countries. Citing the example of cooperative dairy model, the Vice President lauded how the innovation in that field led to the white revolution in India.
“India has a long tradition of innovation and since Independence there have been a series of empowering social innovations in India. The innovation to use buffalo milk in place of cow’s milk to produce milk powder laid the foundation for the Anand cooperative dairy model- ushering in the white revolution in India,” he said.
VP Md. Hamid Ansari also said that how even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had strongly backed the idea of India emerging as an “innovation hub” for he opined that innovation is the only way to strengthen the dynamism and counter stagnation.
“Participating in a ‘digital dialogue’ on 5th of July this year, the Prime Minister promised to give ‘absolute support’ to make enterprise and innovation easier so that India emerges as an innovation hub and keeps pace with the fast changing world,” the Vice President told.
