Congress workers held a massive protest march at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday morning.
All senior party leaders including party chief Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi and former PM Manmohan Singh were present at their Save Democracy march.
Senior leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad and AK Antony were briefly arrested and taken to Parliament Street police station for defying police orders in trying to march towards the Parliament.
The protesters were stopped from marching towards the Parliament and that’s when the Congress leaders courted arrest, said the police.
All of them were released from the Parliament Street police station soon after their arrest.
The Congress launched a sharp attack on the BJP at the protest march. Sonia Gandhi asked Congress workers to unmask the Modi government in a democratic way.
The party president who has been battling allegations in the AgustaWestland deal claimed that the Modi government was targeting them with “baseless allegations.”
“Do not make the mistake of thinking that the Congress party is weak. We will not allow democratic institutions to be weakened or destroyed,” she warned.
She also alleged that the Centre was deliberately destabilising politically elected Opposition governments in the states of Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh.
“Congress-led governments in Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh dislodged by Modi regime by use of money power,” alleged Sonia.
“I want to say clearly that whatever effort you make to destroy democracy, we will not allow it to happen. We are used to waging struggle and we have faced many challenges in the past,” lashed out Sonia.
The ongoing face-off between the government and the Congress in Parliament, especially Rajya Sabha, is what has led the Congress to host the march.
Other than Sonia, Rahul and former PM Manmohan Singh and also addressed the rally.
“Only two people’s writ runs in the country. That is Mohan Bhagwat ji and Narendra Modi ji. And those who stand against them, speak against them face false allegations….Modiji promised ‘achche din’ and today the country is reeling under drought. 40 per cent of the country is reeling under drought. Everyday, 50 farmers are committing suicide. Latur, Vidarbha, Bundelkhand are burning. And Modiji has nothing to say about it,” lashed out Rahul.
On Thursday, Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh had accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “masterminding a conspiracy to implicate” Congress leadership in the AgustaWestland case.
“The cat is out by the manner in which the Prime Minister last night tweeted and hailed Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s reply in Rajya Sabha on the issue. It shows not only his mindset but his strategy too”, Ramesh had said.
