All stage set for return of Jayalalithaa as CM

Former Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa is all set to return on the position she vacated last year after been found guilty of amassing disproportionate wealth. The 67 year old will return to take oath as the 18th chief minister of Tamil Nadu following her acquittal by the Karnataka High Court earlier this month.She will sworn as chief minister on Saturday morning.

Earlier today, the governor of Tamil Nadu K Rosaiah extended an invite to J Jayalalithaa asking her to form the new government after Jaya’s appointee and loyalist O Panneerselvam submitted his resignation from the position of Chief Minister. According to a statement released by Raj Bhavan, Panneerselvam who also holds position of AIADMK Treasurer, submitted his resignation to K Rosaiah early on Friday morning.

“The Governor of Tamil Nadu has invited Selvi (Ms) J Jayalalithaa to form the Ministry at the earliest and requested her to send the list of persons to be appointed as Ministers with portfolios,” the statement said.

According to Raj Bhavan sources, Jayalalithaa is likely to be sworn in “anytime now”.

Earlier , 67-year-old Jayalalithaa was unanimously elected as AIADMK Legislature Party Leader. Party Treasurer O Panneeerselvam forwarded the motion to elect her as new legislature party leader by announcing his resignation as the Chief Minister.

On September 27, 2015, Jayalalithaa was disqualified following her conviction in the Rs 66.66 crore disproportionate assets case by a trial court in Bengaluru on September 27. The Karnataka High Court had subsequently acquitted her of the charges on May 11.

Ahead of the swearing in ceremony, party workers from all over the state has gathered in huge numbers at the AIADMK party headquarters Avvai Shanmugam Salai. AIADMK MLAs were today seen in a buoyant mood on Jayalalithaa’s imminent take over as Chief Minister.
