DMK MLAs led by Opposition leader MK Stalin today staged a protest outside the Tamil Nadu Assembly, a day after they were suspended en masse for a week for allegedly creating ruckus in the House.
The protesting MLAs, who staged a dharna, alleged that they were denied entry into the Assembly premises.
DMK MLAs CVMP Ezhilarasan said the party legislators were denied access to their room inside the Secretariat which also houses the Legislative Assembly.
Stalin was stopped by Assembly marshals who also locked the entry point leading to the House. After they were denied entry, the DMK MLAs, led by Stalin, sat on a dharna.
Meanwhile, security was stepped up in the Secretariat.
Yesterday, the Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes when DMK members protested remarks made by a ruling AIADMK member apparently ridiculing Stalin. Speaker P Dhanapal summoned marshals into the House to evict more than 80 DMK MLAs present.
Speaker P Dhanapal ordered eviction of the DMK members by assembly marshals after they stood up and insisted on expunging of remarks even after he rejected their demand and asked them to cooperate for the smooth conduct of the House.
Trouble began when AIADMK MLA Gunasekaran made a veiled taunt at Leader of Opposition MK Stalin about his mass contact programme. DMK MLAs immediately protested against the comment and raised slogans.
They demanded that the Speaker expunge the comments against Stalin. The Speaker refused to expunge the comments and instead justified them by saying the AIADMK MLA did not name anyone in specific.
The argument between DMK MLAs and the Speaker continued for a few minutes before the Speaker asked the marshals to evict all the protesting MLAs in the House. Stalin was lifted and dropped in the lobby along with the other MLAs
Speaking to media after being hurled out, Stalin accused the Speaker and the Leader of the House O Panneerselvam of “conspiring” to ensure DMK MLAs were not present in the House when the demands for Home department are made.
Later, the government moved a resolution suspending the DMK members for a week which was passed by a voice vote
