The event was organised by the Ministry Human Resource Development to give public recognition to meritorious teachers working in primary, middle and secondary schools.
Prakash Javadekar, the Minister of Human Resource Development, Satya Pal Singh, MoS, Human Resource Development, Higher Education and Upendra Kushwaha MoS, Human Resource Development, School Education, and Literacy were also present at the ceremony.

Apart from teachers from government schools, teachers from schools affiliated with CBSE, CISCE, Sainik Schools and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan were also conferred with the award.
These awards were instituted in 1958 and since 2001 special awards have been instituted for Special Educators who promote inclusive education in schools.
