Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu attended the Medaram festival in Telangana on Friday. It was the first time that a constitutional authority was attending Asia’s largest tribal festival.
The Vice President visited Medaram on Friday afternoon and offered prayers to tribal goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma in Bhoopala Palli District in Telangana.
At the event, the Vice President appreciated that the people of Telangana were continuing such traditions. He also offered the traditional offering of jaggery to the goddesses and prayed for the welfare of all.
The Medaram Jatara or festival is celebrated to pay tributes to the warriors of the Koya tribe.
Over one crore people from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh attended the festival, which also attracts huge crowds from non tribal communities.
