Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has sought the consent of all members of the Rajya Sabha to earmark an initial amount of at least Rs 1 crore from their MPLADS Fund to fight the novel Corona virus outbreak.
Writing to the MPs about the extraordinary situation arising out the global pandemic, the Vice President told them that the Government as well as the stake holders in both the public and the private sector are taking a slew of measures to mitigate and control the situation.
Reminding MPs that it needs an enormous of resources, financial, material and human to successfully combat the situation, the Vice President drew their attention to the circular issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation on March 28 regarding a one-time dispensation under MPLADS for managing COVID-19.
Under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), every MP is given Rs 5 crore annually for the development of their respective constituencies. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation permitted the use of MPLAD funds for medical testing, screening and other facilities required to fight COVID-19.
