At least one person was killed and 25 others were injured when clashes broke out between the police and the members of the Rajput community in Nagaur in Rajasthan. Those injured also included the SP of Nagaur.

The Rajput community was protesting against the killing of gangster Anandpal Singh on June 24. The Rajputs allege that Singh was killed in a fake encounter and are demanding a CBI probe into the matter.

The situation in Nagaur continues to be tense. Curfew was clamped under section 144 of the CRPC in Sanvrad village and the internet services were also shut down as a precautionary measure to keep the situation under control.

“In the clashes, 25 people, including Nagaur SP Paris Anil Deshmukh, IPS officer Monika Sen and 16 policemen sustained injuries,” said ADG Law and Order NRK Reddy.

The police claimed that a large mob pelted stones at them. To control the agitated protesters, the police first fired tear gas shells and then lathi-charged them, Reddy said.

However, he said that police did not open fire. The mob is said to have confiscated an AK-47 and a service revolver from the policemen.

So far 10 people have been detained, the police said.
