Winter Session of Parliament begins

Rajya SabhaWinter Session of Parliament began on Friday morning. Both Houses paid tributes to members who had passed away.

Lok Sabha, the Lower House of Parliament, paid tributes to three sitting and seven former members who died during the inter-session period. The House adjourned for the day soon after the obituary references.

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu began with obituary references. References were made to nine former members. The passing away of Arjan Singh, Marshal of Indian Air Force was also condoled.

Naidu also paid condolences to the victims of boiler blast at NTPC in Unchaar in Rae Bareli. The House also condoled victims of cyclone Okhi that hit Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep islands.

The Chairman announced his order of disqualification of Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar from the Rajya Sabha.

He also announced a new panel of Vice Chairman, who may preside over the Council in the absence of the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman when so requested by the Chairman, or in his absence, by the Deputy Chairman.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was also present in the House, introduced the Ministers of States who were elevated to cabinet rank.

Rajya Sabha saw multiple adjournments through the day after Opposition protested over issues of Prime Minister Modi’s remarks against former PM and Congress leader Manmohan Singh and the disqualification of rebel JD(U) leaders Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar Ansari.

Earlier in the day, ahead of the session, the Prime Minister expressed hope for a ‘fruitful’ Winter Session.

On Thursday, at the all-party meet convened on the eve of the session, Prime Minister Modi appealed for cooperation from all to make the session meaningful and constructive.

Opposition party leaders had also met on Thursday and expressed ‘disappointment and outrage’ over the termination of rebel JD(U) leaders Sharad yadav and Ali Anwar Ansari from Rajya Sabha.
