Women empowerment is vital for achieving sustainable development: VP Naidu

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, on Monday, was the Chief Guest at inauguration ceremony of the International Conference organized jointly by NITI Aayog and Shri Ram College of Commerce at India International Centre, New Delhi.

The theme of the conference was ‘Empowering Women: Fostering Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainability’.

While addressing the conference VP Naidu said that women empowerment is central in achieving the inclusive, equitable and sustainable development. He emphasised that empowerment of all sections of the society contributes to make democracy truly participative.

VP said that gender disparity hinder’s women empowerment and their integration in national mainstream which is not in the favour of social justice. He calls for the need for change in mindset of the society which would lead to a positive attitude towards women & their role in society.

VP underlines that as female education level rises, infant and child mortality rates fall and family health improves. Women’s increased earning capacity has a positive effect on children’s nutrition, health and educational prospects.

Women are doing exceedingly well in higher professional education and there is a need to ensure their commensurate participation in formal economy.

Women’s active participation in decision-making has a positive impact on education, health, nutrition, employment and social protection and their empowerment has a multiplier effect not only on their own lives but also on the family and the society.

VP further said that women constitute nearly 50 per cent of our population have a greater role to play in the task of nation building. He said that double digit growth cannot be achieved without their active participation.
